She Is Michelle and You Are Not!
It’s pretty safe to say that I’m not the only guy on the Michelle Obama bandwagon. With her background, grace, and consciousness, she never ceases to amaze me, and never so much as during her speech at the Democratic National Convention. She was awe inspiring. In fact, during a routine mixed-gender get together, I mentioned that I’d never seen a contemporary sister support her man on a public stage like that before. The brothers in the room gave me the routine cosign, but the sisters in the circle got quiet. They looked at me, then they looked at each other, then they looked at me again. Then all hell broke loose.
Although my intention was to show my adoration for Michelle, whom I consider our Coretta Scott King, apparently I’d fired off a shot in the fragile truce of gender politics between black men and women. Hindsight is always 20/20, but it was too late. It was on.
To be clear, when I say support in this case, I’m not talking about ‘defending.’ I’ve seen too many women put in the embarrassing position of sitting beside their man after he’s done something trifling, playing the forgiving wife, or, conversely, defending their man from public attack or prosecution. That’s not what I mean. I’m talking about supporting a man’s dream at the expense of your family life and/or personal aspirations. Again, I’m not talking about pastor’s wife. Michelle is out hustling for Barack, selling his dream, not necessarily hers. That’s what I was talking about.
I clearly hit a nerve though, as my assertion somehow was taken as ‘you sistas don’t know how to support us!’ All of a sudden, I was Walter Lee Ruther from A Raisin in the Sun, blaming all the women around him for the problems of the world.
Mind you, my point was that I never said this type of support CAN’T or DOESN’T happen, but rather that it was my first time seeing it, particularly in this day and time when there’s a lot of Terrell Owens in both men and women. I had placated the situation until one of my boys chimed in. ‘Nah, don’t back up playa. You right! I don’t know none!” he half laughed. “That’s real talk!” Damn. It was on again.
Oh well. No good deed goes unpunished, as they say. In the end, I hadn’t dented Michelle’s shine, and I believe I sparked further—albeit hot-button—discussion. I’d be interested in your opinion though. Feel free to write us and prove me wrong (or right). I’ll just be here hanging out…on the couch.

You did hit a nerve, and a very sensitive one. I'm sure the ladies in the room, some at least, felt insulted by your comment, but nonetheless, you cannot be held responsible for the cause of this tension. We could go into the reasons why. But I'm sure you've heard them all before.
I would suggest this perspective, women are a very diverse group. Yet we all have one thing in common regardless of our race. We all want to be appreciated! Black woman need to hear, especially from our own race, that we are holding it together. We are supporting not only our spouses/partners, children, parents, churches, careers, but our ENTIRE communities in the constant face of adversity and criticism.
Michelle isn't unique. She is in the spotlight! And under the lights she is a shining example of what we can be IF we have a Barak. They, TOGETHER, make the equation of FAMILY work. He supports and "PRAISES" Michelle constantly which in turn encourages her to do her part and support him. It is MICHELLE + BARAK that makes this thing called a well adjusted supportive UNIT work!
Let me add that her parents prepared her well also, just as she and Barak are preparing their daughters. That is the other side of the coin. We can't expect to get out of our society what has not be nurtured. Therefore, we have to commit to commitment. If we have to the time to get into relationships and foster children, then see it through TOGETHER with the diligence that parenting is the greatest responisibility we will ever be afforded. Michelle's parents clearly gave her the foundation to be the proud, intellegent and supportive woman she is today by example. Her father was the MAN of the house and he was present there with his wife who was and is the lady of the Robinson household.
So let's be clear that Michelle is me and I am Michelle and so are hundreds of thousands of woman who have been fortune enough to have the support of her parents and the LOVE of her life in the form of a man she respects and can follow.
Peace to you and may God bless you one day with your own Michelle, if you don't already have one. I pray that you will be her Barak.
